The 15th anniversary of the Dior Grand Bal
The 15th anniversary of the Dior Grand Bal
The swirling of time
October 25th, 2026
For the last fifteen years, the Dior Grand Bal timepiece has embodied a couture take on the universe of watches. With its lines, movement and elegance, it conveys the entire Maison’s essence and makes Christian Dior’s creations wearable on the wrist. As if Mr Dior himself had thought of a ball gown able to tell the time.
It stems from an analogy. Time is motion, like a dance step. And the circular passage of time on the dial evokes the swirling of gowns. In 2011 the first
Dior Grand Bal models made their mark on the world of watchmaking, with their
“Inversé” calibre and unique feature: the oscillating weight takes centre stage on the front of the dial, right under the hand stack. To wind its automatic mechanism it swirls to the rhythm of the wearer. The beating heart of the timepiece, usually concealed, becomes a feature, an ornament and a signature. It can be admired. It partakes in celebrations. It waltzes.
It reminds us of Junon, the 1949 iconic dress whose embroidered petals recall peacock feathers, and of its sister dress Vénus, crafted from silk tulle. It conjures up all party gowns that Christian Dior presented in every collection as his style signature. These extremely sophisticated dresses, imagined for galas and balls, with their full skirt and cinched waist created a sumptuous look. Built with luxury fabrics - faille, taffeta, velvet, satin - and embellished with embroidery, pearls and shiny stones, not only do these gowns style a silhouette, they also encourage a way of moving, a way of being where beauty becomes a shared celebration and a real taste for life.
The watch was inspired by these grand ball gowns, whose image and name it borrowed. Every season, the
Dior Grand Bal collection showcases new models for us to admire in a show. Every piece celebrates the technical mastery of jewellers, exactly as ball gowns celebrate the savoir-faire of Haute Couture Ateliers. Whether in diamond embroidery, metal lace, plumage work, sunray pleats, mother-of-pearl or precious stone marquetry, the oscillating weight is testament to both the boldest creativity and the most accomplished artistic craftsmanship. This watch is not merely a timekeeper. It captures the essence of Dior in horology.
“Parties are genuine works of art. They bring back the sense and meaning of authentic popular celebrations,” Christian Dior said in his autobiography
Christian Dior et Moi. At the end of the 1940s and throughout the 1950s, just as Christian Dior’s creations broke free from the post-war austere style and reintroduced the splendour of the
Belle Époque, high society rediscovered the pleasure of lavish celebrations.
One cannot go without the other.
“The founding of Maison Christian Dior rode this wave of optimism, as well as the return of an ideal of civilised happiness” the designer added. He was invited to the most memorable balls of the time. In 1949 he dressed up as a lion for the Ball of Kings and Queens hosted by the Count and Countess Étienne de Beaumont. In 1951 Carlos de Beistegui organised the Ball of Masks and Dominoes in his Palazzo Labia in Venice, under a canopy of Giambattista Tiepolo’s frescoes. The name Party of the Century was bestowed upon this ball, given the magnificence it was remembered for.
Among the 1000 guests who arrived by gondola, we can name Barbara Hutton, Daisy Fellowes, Orson Welles, Luchino Visconti, Salvador Dalí… with whom Christian Dior designed the costumes for the giants who paraded through La Serenissima on the eve of the ball. The Baroness of Cabrol, viscountess of Noailles… “Like in a frenzy everybody wanted to host a ball in honour of a work of art or of their friends, in Paris, in the countryside, on the Eiffel Tower, on a Seine river boat, anywhere where dancing was unusual. Paris was cosmopolitan again. Our friends from abroad came back to the city of their choosing” Christian Dior recalls in his autobiography. He was the privileged witness, the actor and the costume designer of these events. His models were the dramatic effect of the night. Couture became a character. Style was a performance.
Haute couture ateliers worked to the highest standard on those details no one looks at: linings, invisible stitches, hidden finishing. The interior is not second-best; it has to be as beautiful as the exterior. The Grand Bal timepiece perfectly transposes this principle to watchmaking. It is Dior’s identity. Better still, the timekeeper enhances it. It reinterprets what normally works backstage - the oscillating weight - and takes its design to such a high level of excellence that it can adorn the front dial. The interior becomes the exterior. It is not a provocation, it is a declaration of beauty. It is also the prerogative of jewellery-making.
To celebrate the 15
th anniversary of
Dior Grand Bal, this year’s models strengthen their relationship with Dior’s history even more. Grand Bal Muguet with its mother-of-pearl oscillating weight pays homage to Christian Dior’s passion for the lily of the valley, his spring lucky flower. Out of superstition he used to hide it in the lining of wedding gowns. Grand Bal Muguet Fleuri with its gold oscillating weight in openwork, diamonds, sapphires and amethysts recalls the bouquets that René Gruau - a friend of the designer’s - used to draw whilst illustrating the femmes-fleurs gowns of Dior collections.
Several unique pieces have been created to celebrate the anniversary. Seven Dior Grand Bal Jardin Parisien models revive the spirit of tapestries Christian Dior used to keep in the winter garden in his townhouse on Boulevard Jules Sandeau. Gold branches and hard stone marquetry provide the oscillating weight structure, whilst diamonds, rubies, sapphires, tsavorites, emeralds and spessartines create a floral relief on the oscillating weight. The dials, made of elytra and coleoptera, diffuse an iridescent and metallic effect. They are the scenery where the rotor swirls like a party dress.
These pieces join two of Christian Dior’s greatest passions: balls and gardens. Travelling has been another Maison’s major theme since its very first collection in 1947, the New Look. Caracas and
Nuit de Naples gowns seem to be an invitation to discover the world. India is a favourite destination: the models are named
Radjah, Pondichéry, Chandernagor, Indes Galantes… The eight unique 2026
Dior Gand Bal Nuit des Indes pieces reconnect with India. Their oscillating weight features embroidery made of pearls, gold cabochons, lacquer, diamonds, emeralds and tsavorites. It swirls on richly adorned dials, whose chromatic harmony projects to the bracelet and the cushion case, paved with diamonds, sapphires and tsavorites.
These exceptional pieces evoke Christian Dior and his interpretation of couture as a spectacular form of art, of celebrations as an expression of joy, of motion as a performance, of fashion shows as
“the collection grand ball”, as he defines in his autobiography. If we allow ourselves to formulate hypotheses, a timepiece designed by Christian Dior would not have been any different. He would have pursued his dream of a piece where dramatisation, light and metamorphosis interplay.
Dior Grand Bal recalls that timepiece. Fifteen years after its launch, it still narrates the same story. It translates the whole essence of Dior into horology. And it makes sure that beauty is created to dance.
