Chopard Ambassador Romain Dumas adds a new altitude driving record to his list of achievements
Chile, November 2022 – Chopard Ambassador Romain Dumas has broken a new record by becoming the first racing driver to take on an altitude of 6,007 metres. At the wheel of two cars specially developed for this feat, he tackled the steep slopes of the Ojos del Salado in Chile under extreme conditions. During this experience where he proudly represented Chopard, he wore one of the most innovative chronographs around: the Alpine Eagle XL Chrono.
Romain Dumas achieved yet another feat ten days ago when he drove up the slopes of the world’s highest volcano (Ojos del Salado, Chile). Persevering until forced to stop by what he described as a wall of ice and snow, he reached an altitude of 6,007 metres. Two experimental Porsche 911 models were specially developed by the German car manufacturer and
Romain Dumas himself to handle these extreme conditions (-30° C and half the oxygen at sea level).
“This was a truly memorable and special moment in a place that’s both beautiful and brutal. I guess the only machines anywhere in the world higher than us today were aircraft!” said the French driver on the day of the event.
On his wrist was an Alpine Eagle XL Chrono timepiece featuring a 44 mm-diameter case in Lucent Steel A223, an innovative, dermo-compatible, highly luminous and ultra-resistant steel exclusive to Chopard, complemented by a Pitch Black dial and a rubber strap. Chronometer-certified by the COSC, the Chopard 03.05-C column-wheel chronograph movement with flyback function is one of the most innovative available and has earned the Manufacture three patents – a horological feat further emphasised by the new record set by the Maison’s Ambassador.
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Chopard Co-President and a personal friend of Romain Dumas said:
“I have followed the many challenges taken up by Romain Dumas for several years, and it is a privilege for our Maison to accompany and encourage him in his successes. With this new technical challenge, he takes to the (literally!) highest levels the values of surpassing oneself and perseverance, which never cease to inspire our workshops and myself.”
Distinguished by a round case featuring stylised raised sides, compass rose-engraved crown, bezel with eight functional indexed screws, along with a deep-coloured textured dial bearing luminescent hour-markers, along with a chronometer-certified precision movement, Alpine Eagle is the watch collection for contemporary eagles: those aspirational men who outperform in their daily lives and whose vision inspires and uplifts.
Men like Romain Dumas, an ambitious racing driver ready for any challenge, chosen by Chopard to represent it. A two-time winner of the
“24 Hours of Le Mans” and accustomed to setting world records, Romain Dumas notably broke the Nordschleife-Nürburgring lap speed record in an electric car in 2019.
