The J12 was born from this universal instinct for exploration. Inspired by racing yachts, CHANEL’s watchmaking icon is the first luxury watch to be made entirely from ceramic, a material whose unrivalled durability is matched only by its softness. An exceptional creation that revolutionized the world of watchmaking from the moment it was born and designed to maintain its allure, whatever the tides may bring.


In 2000, the J12 ceramic was born of a singular challenge: the decision to create an entirely black watch. At odds with the models of the time, this material asserted itself while revealing surprising properties of durability and softness.

The line and the material
A CHANEL watch is first and foremost a creative vision. Over twenty years ago Jacques Helleu, then the Artistic Director of the House for Watches, envisioned the lines of a new sports watch, but a sports watch according to CHANEL. Inspired by the design of racing yachts, the J12 was born, and one colour stood out as the perfect choice: black, as Mademoiselle Chanel liked to say, “which surpasses all”. To satisfy this desire for simplicity, only ceramic could produce a perfectly monochrome result.

The J12 quickly became available in white and, more recently, in blue. Behind these colours lies the finest craftsmanship of the CHANEL Watch Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland: a unique pigmentation process, temperature adjustment, polishing, and more.

Invincible softness
Beyond appearances, ceramic has also proven to be an exceptional material that can withstand heat, wear and corrosion. It acquires its incomparable resistance to scratches and the effects of time after being heated to over 1,300°C in the Manufacture.

But the J12’s greatest strength lies in the softness of its ceramic, which feels as smooth as silk against the skin. And, while it is seven times more resistant than steel, it is lighter. An invincible softness that becomes one with whomever wears it.

Ceramic body after injection. The raw material is placed in a mould, and then a combination of heat and pressure is applied to give the piece its basic shape. CHANEL engineers take many factors into account many factors into account to ensure the success of this operation, which is essential to the uniformity and quality of the ceramic.

Debinding. This step consists of eliminating the agent used to bind the raw material and enable injection.

Machining. After cooling and robotic transport, CHANEL experts refine the piece’s rough shape and create the final silhouette through a series of mechanical processes, a step that requires extreme precision.

Polishing. The last stage of production involves smoothing and polishing the ceramic piece to make it shiny and incomparably smooth. The black is intense, the white, dazzling.

Resistance test. Seven times more resistant than steel, CHANEL ceramic withstands all challenges in the most rigorous tests simulated under extreme conditions: millions of abrasive grains, thousands of impacts, dozens of hours under the sun’s UV rays.

A sense of proportion
The sapphire crystal case back of the J12 wholeheartedly reveals the Calibre 12.1, rendering the invisible visible. And for CHANEL, the reverse side must be as beautiful as the front. Standing the test of time
What the eye cannot see is the impeccable performance of the Calibre 12.1. That of a self-winding movement assembled at the Kenissi Manufacture, co-owned by CHANEL. A mark of excellence for a mechanism designed to withstand every test, which, thanks to its superior efficiency, has established itself as the absolute benchmark in watchmaking.
